Submission Guidelines for Authors

ICMI welcomes high-quality submissions on theoretical and empirical foundations, component technologies, and combined multimodal processing techniques that define the field of multimodal interaction analysis, interface design, and system development. There are two different submission categories:

  • Long paper: The maximum length is 8 pages in the two-column ACM conference format (excluding references). An accompanying demonstration can be presented during the demo session (see Call for Demonstrations). Accepted long papers will be presented as either a long talk or a poster.
  • Short paper: The maximum length is 4 pages in the two-column ACM conference format (excluding references). Accepted short papers will be presented as either a short talk or a poster.

Note: An important change to the submission format was introduced in 2017: references do not count towards the page limit. Both long and short papers can have additional pages beyond their 8 and 4 page limits that are used exclusively for references.

There will be a mixture of oral presentations and poster presentations at the conference. The decision of a poster or an oral presentation will be made by the program committee. Please note that the main difference between short and long papers is in the size of contributions and not in the importance of the contributions. In other words, a paper in eight pages will be expected to have more contribution than one with four pages. Rejected long papers will not be considered for acceptance as short papers, unless the reviewers unanimously believe this is the right decision. Authors are asked to carefully consider the category of each submitted paper.

Prior Publications

Papers submitted at ICMI 2018 must not have been published previously. A paper is considered to have been published previously if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A paper substantially similar in content to one submitted to ICMI 2018 should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or workshop.

ICMI 2018 does not consider a paper on as a dual submission.

The reviewing will be double blind, so submissions should be anonymous: do not include the authors' names, affiliations or any clearly identifiable information in the paper. It is appropriate to cite past work of the authors if these citations are treated like any other (e.g., "Smith [5] approached this problem by....") - omit references only if it would be obviously identifying the authors. If a non-anonymous paper has already been submitted, please re-submit with the identifying information removed. Paper chairs are likely to desk reject non-anonymous papers.

Submitted papers should conform to the ACM publication format. For MS Word and Latex templates and examples, please click on the following link: Current ACM Master Article Template
Note: Please use the latest ACM_SigConf format for both short and long paper submissions.

Note that the ACM Categories & Subject Descriptors section and Author Keywords are mandatory to be included on the first page for your final version to appear in the proceedings and ACM Digital Library. As well, if your submission is accepted within the acceptance notification you will be notified of the updated ICMI'18 ACM copyright-permission text to update and include.

Rebuttal Period

Authors will be able to see the reviews and post a short rebuttal addressing any major misinterpretation or error. The rebuttal period will be followed by a discussion period between the reviewers and Senior Program Committee members (not visible to authors). Authors will be notified of the final decision soon after.

Online Submission

For online paper submissions, please click on the following link: Precision Conference*
Authors will need to create a new account to log into the new Precision Conference system for submissions, even if they already have an account though the old Precision Conference system.
*Please select Society="SIGCHI", Conference="ICMI 2018", Track="ICMI 2018 Long and Short Papers".

Extra material (e.g. videos) up to 40MB can be attached in the same submission website.
For questions related to the info on this page, please contact one of the program or demonstration chairs.

Authors of accepted papers will be required to sign an ACM copyright release. AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of your conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. (For those rare conferences whose proceedings are published in the ACM Digital Library after the conference is over, the official publication date remains the first day of the conference.)
